How to ride a motorcycle and buying one?

March 17th, 2011 admin 6 comments

The truck I have now is a manual, and I've been driving it for a few years now. Last year I bought myself a 150cc scooter, and it was a lot of fun, but I sold it. Ok, maybe not a lot of fun, but still fun. I am thinking about getting a motorcycle for this summer. Is there a lot of difference between a shifting a car and a motorcycle? I have ridden a bike a couple times in the past. My first time I flipped the bike revving too high and let off the clutch too fast. The second time was fine but I didn't get to ride long.

I was thinking about a Kawasaki 250, or a 600-750cc. The second time I rode a bike it was a 750, and it liked the weight and feel of it. The scooter was ok, but I am pretty sure I'd like more acceleration. Is 250cc enough larger than 150? I do plan on taking a couple longer trips on it, possibly with a passenger (100-200 miles round trip). Last variable is I am a big-ish guy, 6'1 220lbs. Which would be a better idea for a bike for myself?

I think you are supposed to shift to first gear before you stop? Is getting going from a stop the same as a car, should I just ride the clutch "slow" at first to get a feel? When do you shift on a bike, you are supposed to shift at higher RPMs (5000, 7000?)? Is rev matching the same for bikes and cars?

I have been looking at used bikes, what is high mileage for a motorcycle? I have heard 20,000 is about the end of life for a bike, and I see mostly bikes for sale in the 3000-12,000 mile range.

Thanks in advance.
No my parents don't have a burial plan, but if I die lots of people get money.

Sound like a good idea?

Alright...i've been saving up to buy some kind of vehicle. My main concern is gas mileage (atleast 35mpg if i bought a car). I have roughly 00...i was origianally going to buy a scooter. My family talked me out of the scooter and encoraged me to buy a car. Talked it over with my family and my brother said he would pitch in 0 and my dad would help out some. So I would have anywhere from 2000-2300 dollars for a car..So I understood everything but I decided to step up to a motorcycle instead of a scooter and the parents were considering it...then my good friend talked me out of getting a 600cc motorcycle (due to my lack of experience on any kind of bike) and suggested to buy a car and he'd fix up this shitty 250cc motorcycle for me to have and I'd learn how to ride then I could upgrade motorcycle after saving up my money. So I'd have a car and a motorcycle by the end of summer (and have a bigger bike by next spring). Any good ideas I could add to this pitch to give to the parents?

I'm 1.90m or 6.2 if you prefer, 88k or 193.6lbs & 27years old.

I was never an owner of a motorcycle, but more than regularly different kind of bikes passed through my hands, others for several months other for weeks, you understand what i trying to say...

I have a drivers licence for motorcycles, as also, at this moment, i have the money to buy a new one.

What do you ppl think, should i buy it, or is it a dangerous bike to start as your own???

I like to use it for going to my work everyday and, as summer is also on it's way, for making some trips that contain highways & dirt paths.

My bio on motorcycles consists of several kind of "ducks", scooters and small enduros up to 250cc

What type of motorcycle should I get?

I have always been fascinated by motorcycles ever since I was little, but I was never blessed with the chance to learn to ride one. Now I'm older and I have been saving up money. First of all, I'm sure there are a lot of experienced riders out there so I'm gonna go ahead and throw this out there.

I'm 5 ft 11in. I weigh 155 lbs. and I have zero experience with motorcycles (except with a 250cc Scooter, which I know is completely different.) I do know how to drive stick (I hear it's a plus if you do) and other than that I'm completely and utterly willing to take any amount of classes to learn how to ride.

Now for specifics. I'm not sure which bike I should purchase to learn on. I know I will not be going over 250cc because anything more powerful than that and I might as well consider myself dead.
The thing is, I really dislike ninja style bikes and heavy looking cruisers. Nothing against them, but I just don't enjoy their aesthetic. I'm really set on anything standard. I like vintage as well. Does anyone have any recommendations for a Standard, vintage looking bike that is 250cc or less? Preferably anything that can resemble a cafe racer.

FYI* My dream bike that I am working towards down the line is a 2008 Ducati Sport Classic Biposto. I know it'll take a few years to develop my skill to that level bike, but I'll get there.
